Spotify cost
But in the streaming world, if that starts to hit the artists’ pockets directly, that is a whole other matter – both economically and ethically. As streaming expands around the world, some countries with huge populations will have lower prices and big potential. Organisations taking a hit themselves as a means of drumming competitors out of the market is one thing: these are, after all, their own profits that are being squeezed. US Congress is now taking a keen interest in its repercussions that could “ultimately lead to further cut pay for working artists and ultimately potentially less consumer choice”. Then there is the controversial Discovery Mode tool which launch last November “where artists and labels can select tracks to be promoted in the recommendation algorithms for Spotify’s radio and autoplay features, in return for a lower royalty rate”. The UK tabloid newspaper market was gripped by this in the 1990s and early 2000s and any victory here seemed to be pyrrhic. Services are having to add new features but are tentative (at best) to raise the core subscription price in case a rival benefits by undercutting them. It is now feeling like an all-out arms race with regard to pricing here. This could all force Spotify’s hand to treat this as a free ad-on rather than a premium upsell.
Then Apple Music responded by adding in lossless playback for no extra cost. In February this year, Spotify announced that it was rolling out its improved audio HiFi tier, but it was unclear if this could come at a higher price than a standard subscription.
#Spotify cost full
Six full subscriptions would mean just under $60 a month being generated, but six users on a family subscription would mean just $15.99 a month being generated. If anything, it is actually moving down in terms of ARPU (average revenue per user) when multi-user subscription packages are being offered.
That’s not moving up in line with inflation: that’s not moving at all. The existential conundrum for the music business is that, decades into streaming, the core price is not moving up.

But could they pay at least something a month to give them slightly more user features? This is clearly what Spotify Plus is trying to figure out: just what is that tipping point price for long-term free tier users who are never going to pay full price for a full subscription? These users may never pass through the conversion funnel and become subscribers at $9.99 a month (the core philosophy Spotify has built itself around since launch). The problem, of course, is that many consumers are happy to use the free tier even if it has playback limitations. There is also a package for couples who live together. The standard price is $9.99 a month for a single subscription, but there are variations on that including student discounts and family plans that allow up to six users to share a subscription cost. Spotify needs to not only grow its subscriber base and its market share it also wants to take more people off its free tier and coax them into some form of subscription. Spotify, the world's largest streaming music company, is expected to be listed on the Wall Street stock market in the first quarter of 2018. As a comparison, in September, Apple Music claimed 30 million subscribers and Deezer had fewer than 10 million subscribers.
